Fitness Q + A

Since starting the Fitness Q + A I have been flooded with
hundreds of emails - so if you sent me a question and I
have answered it yet, please hang in there. I will try to
get to all the questions over the next few issues.
Here's a few questions that I've received lately:

Q. Hi I've had a pain in the butt(HA HA). Really it's in
the back of my thigh and goes deep into my backside.
Sometimes when I'm lying down it really throbs. Any
suggestions?

A. It sounds like sciatic or reffered pain. Without knowing
you personally or your physical condition, I can't give you
specific advice... BUTT (Ha, Ha) I can say there are a few
things you can try:
1. stretch your glutes by lying on your back, cross your
leg and place your foot over your knee. Gently lift your
bottom leg up towards your chest until you feel a stretch
in your backside.
2. get a sports massage and have them work on your glutes
and lower back

4. if it doesn't imporve, get it checked out by an expert

Q. when is the best time for cardiovascular exercise?
is it early in the morning(before breakfast) or late
afternoon?? why?

A. There is no best time and forget what the "experts" in
Shape or Muscle + Fitness say. What matters is what you do
during your workout.
Never exercise on an empty stomach! Many people do this
thinking they will burn off more fat. Trouble is when you
exercise on an empty stomach you actually are more likely to
burn off muscle tissue. It's like going on a road trip with
no gas in your car!

Prominent Scientists Form Group to Counter GM Food
___________________________________________________
Dozens of well-known scientists have formed a group to
counteract GM food, which is reportedly being promoted
by the government and the scientific community in the UK
as being scientifically sound.
The group, named the Independent Science Panel (ISP) on
GM, has released a report, The Case for A GM Free
Sustainable World, which puts together a wealth of
evidence to support their recommendation of a ban on GM
crops and a widespread adoption of organic sustainable
agriculture.
The report comes after many of the scientists have felt
frustrated by the lack of open public debate on a variety
of scientific and other issues. According to the group,
meetings organized by the government to discuss the topic
are stacked with GM-supporting scientists who promote the
potential benefits of GM and say there has been no
evidence of harm.
The scientists hope to spur the GM debate with their
report, which has already attracted considerable attention

Healthy + Tasty Recipes

Rice Pancakes
Makes: 4 servings
Ingredients:
2 cups cooked wild or brown rice
1/2 cup whey or eggwhite protein powder
1/2 cup fat-free egg substitute or 4 egg whites
1/2 cup nonfat milk
1/4 cup peas
1/4 cup corn
1/4 cup green peppers, diced
1/4 cup green onions, chopped
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
Directions:
Cook wild rice according to the package directions and allow
to cool.
Blend together the flour, egg substitute or egg whites, and
milk until smooth. Add the wild rice, peas, corn, green
peppers, green onions, and parsley. Stir to mix well.
Coat a pan with nonstick cooking spray (nonfat), pour 1/4
cup batter onto pan. Cook over medium heat until golden
brown. Flip and repeat. Serve with plumb or sweet and sour
sauce.
Nutritional Information:
Serving size: 3 pancakes
Calories: 170
Fat: 1 g
Cholesterol: 1 mg
Protein: 14 g
Carbohydrates: 20 g
Fiber: 3 g

Why Are so Many Toddlers Obese?

More than 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Many U.S.
toddlers are also obese and are even showing signs of diabetes and
other diseases associated with obesity, according to researchers.
Moreover, when obese children were sent to specialists they still did
not achieve healthier weights.
Researchers examined the medical records of 385 children, most of
whom were already obese, defined as being in the 85th percentile for
weight. The children were seen by endocrinologists, or hormone
specialists, between 1984 and 2002.
Although the parents were educated on proper diet and exercise for
their children as well as advised to meet with a dietician, after two
years the children weighed, on average, even more than before.
According to researchers, it is clear that referral to pediatric
endocrinologists and dieticians is not effective in treating
childhood obesity. Instead, they suggest a weight-loss program that
includes the children, parents and the school system.
The children in the study, some as young as 4 years old, also had
high insulin levels, which can lead to type 2 diabetes, and 13
percent of 147 children tested had abnormal liver function tests,
according to researchers. Such tests indicate a common condition with
obesity known as fatty liver, which can lead to cirrhosis. People who
are obese or overweight have an increased risk of diabetes, heart
disease and certain cancers. Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in
