Weekend Warriors: Its not too late to get back in the game!

By: Keith Cannone

Still not ready to hang up the old high tops, still think your fade away jumpshot resembles the great Michael Jordan? If so, then you too are a weekend warrior. Who ever said that sports and games are for kids? Anyone who has played sports understands the essence of competition, the thrill of victory, and harshness of defeat. That is embedded in the mind forever; it’s usually the body that can’t keep up. I remember being the young guy at the court running circles around the old guys. You remember, the guys that would show up, play one game and leave exhausted, back to their world of responsibilities. The only thing that would keep me from playing through the night was that the lights in the park shut off at midnight. Well those days are unfortunately over. However, I still enjoy those pickup games in the summer and those backyard football classics in the fall. But I am constantly reminded by my body that I am not 16 anymore, and I usually find myself lying on the floor in pain after a couple hours of b-ball.

In fact, it was there on the floor when it hit me, I AM the old guy now. I didn’t like that, I didn’t like it at all. I regret the fact that my body is already preventing me from doing the things I love. I am determined to do something about that. The reason for this article is two-fold. One, to remind everyone that you are never to old to play, to have fun, or to dream of sinking the game winning free throw. Secondly, the reason why our bodies regress is because we stop doing the things we did when we were younger, like stretching, exercise, eating right.

Its true, those boring routine stretches we were forced to do in junior high actually had a purpose, other than beefing up the report card with an easy A!!! Flexibility is vital to living a long pain free life. It is the inactivity in our lives that that creates muscle imbalances and often causes long term pain. Not to mention the lethargic mindset, that keeps you sunken into the couch and glued to T.V. So today is the day to begin the new you, or the old (young, care free) you, well you know what I mean. Lace up the old converse, slap on those rec-spec goggles, and hit the hardwood. Do me one favor though, leave the old shorts at home. You’ve definitely out grown those…. They didn’t even fit back then!!
